INF-2 Troubleshooting

This article outlines common symptoms and fixes for the Park Tool INF-1 & INF-2 Shop Inflators.

Getting Started / Best Practices

The Park Tool INF-2 Shop Inflator

Park Tool Shop Inflators contain a series of seals and other parts that, over time and with use, can require adjustment or replacement. A few simple proactive measures will keep your INF-2 performing as designed and prevent unnecessary wear and tear:

  • Keep harsh chemicals away from INF-2 to prevent damage to o-rings and seals.
  • It is highly recommended to use a water separator on your air compressor. If your air compressor does not have a water separator or filter, regularly draining the compressor will keep water out of the INF-2 to help keep it performing correctly.
  • Periodically add a couple of drops of air tool oil to the INF-2 through the coupler plug to help keep the INF-2 lubricated.
  • Tire sealants such as those found on tubeless systems can clog the head of the INF-2. If used on a tire filled with sealant, immediately press and release the trigger several times to clear the head.

Here are some common symptoms that may present themselves, and some potential solutions:

2

Cannot Install onto Presta Valve

If the INF-2 does not install onto Presta valves, but air comes through the Presta side when the trigger is pulled, you may need to adjust the Presta seal. Loosen the cap on the Presta side of the head with an 8 mm hex wrench, and re-tighten the cap just until it contacts the Presta seal. Test the inflator on the valve and re-adjust as necessary.

The full process is outlined in the short video below:

3

Poor Seal / Leaks During Use

If the inflator forms a poor seal (air leaks out between the tool and valve or can’t get tire pressure past a certain point) when engaged on Presta and Schrader valves, it may be necessary to perform a head seal replacement. Replacement seal kits (part #1586K) can be obtained from Park Tool or our distribution partners.

The full process of head seal replacement is outlined in the short video below:

If air is leaking out between the head and the body of the tool, it is likely that the head adapter has become loose. To tighten the head adaptor (part #1584 — reference #12 in the parts diagram), unthread the head (part #1587.2 / ref. #15) from the retaining ring (part #1583 / ref. #11) until the head can be pulled off. Then tighten the head adapter using the wrench flats on the end — it should be fairly tight. Reassemble by reversing the steps. If the head adapter keeps coming loose, remove the head adapter entirely, apply some mild threadlocker to the threads, and reinstall.

Leaks When Not in Use

If air is leaking from the inflator when not in use, it may be necessary to perform a trigger seal replacement. Replacement seal kits (part #1595K) can be obtained from Park Tool or our distribution partners.

The full process of trigger seal replacement is outlined in the short video below:

Air Does Not Flow Through

If the airflow through the inflator seems blocked up or simply does not happen when the trigger is pulled, it might be clogged with tubeless sealant. In this case, you will need to clean out the dried-up sealant:

  1. Remove and disassemble the head.
  2. Clean all the components inside of the head in warm soapy water.
  3. Check that the seals are still good — if so, apply a silicone-based grease liberally to all seals.
  4. Reassemble. Install the Schrader cap snugly (3-4 Nm) and tighten the Presta cap to the proper setting.
